SPOON BALLOON
Inspired by Catherine Winter and Chris Julin

You’ll need:

  • A round balloon inflated by mouth (not helium)
  • Wooden spoons
  • Rope or string

Spoon Balloon is an off-the-wall (sometimes literally), indoor combination of badminton, tennis, and volleyball. The wooden spoons are your racquets and the balloon is the ball.

Find a relatively open space in your home. Across the middle of that space, string a rope, string, or anything else that can function as your “net.” Tie the ends to anything that works: furniture, stair rails, doorknobs, etc.

Choose up teams and give every player a wooden spoon from the kitchen. The object is to hit the balloon back and forth across the “net” without letting it touch the floor. If the balloon touches the floor on your side of the net, then the other team gets 1 point.

With that simple set-up, you can create variations in the rules to suit your fancy. For example, you can:

  • Use the volleyball rule, which says that each team is entitled to a maximum of 3 hits (in addition to blocking) to return the balloon – and no single player can hit the balloon 2 times in a row.
  • Allow shots that bounce off the wall or furniture, as long as the balloon does not hit the ground.
  • Prohibit shots that bounce off the wall or furniture, scoring them as points the way you do when the balloon touches the ground.
  • Allow more players on one team than the other.
  • Play singles.
  • Play until one team gets 21 points. Or 10. Or 30. You decide!
  • Make up any other rules that all the players can agree on.

Spoon Balloon is just as much fun for adults as for kids!  Make sure that the playing area is cleared of fragile items that might get knocked over or broken by an errant swing of a wood spoon, or by someone falling over trying to get a shot (or falling over in uncontrollable laughter).

America the Beautiful

In 2004, Americans spent $12.4 billion (yes, billion!) on cosmetic surgery. The real costs of our obsession with youth, beauty and a slender physique are tallied in an epidemic of eating disorders, complications and deaths from unnecessary surgeries, exposure to dangerous toxins in cosmetics, and the equally toxic effects on a generation of young people who are told–in some 40,000 media messages a year–that unless you look like the supermodels and rock stars, you’re not good enough for anyone to love. It’s a message too many of them are buying.
