News And Events
A
new study from four major universities confirms earlier findings: people spend
more money when feeling sad and self-absorbed. Psychologists say the so-called
“misery-is-not-miserly” phenomenon is rooted in a culture that encourages
people to buy to feel better. Harvard professor Jennifer Lerner told USA Today:
"This is a phenomenon that occurs without awareness. This is really
different from the idea of retail therapy, where people are feeling negative
and want to cheer themselves up by shopping.”
These studies provide great motivation to talk with your
daughter about healthy ways to deal with difficult emotions—strategies that
actually deal with the feelings, rather than trying to numb them through
spending, alcohol use, self-abuse, etc. The research also reminds us to set a
good example (and keep ourselves healthy) by dealing with our own emotions
openly and appropriately.
In cooperation with Dads & Daughters, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America
has launched its “Time to Talk” campaign to help parents talk frequently with
our children—an essential strategy to keep them healthy and drug free.
We’re gathering your stories, ideas, and wisdom for great

America the Beautiful
In 2004, Americans spent
$12.4 billion (yes, billion!) on cosmetic surgery. The real costs
of our obsession with youth, beauty and a slender physique are tallied in an
epidemic of eating disorders, complications and deaths from unnecessary
surgeries, exposure to dangerous toxins in cosmetics, and the equally toxic
effects on a generation of young people who are told–in some 40,000 media
messages a year–that unless you look like the supermodels and rock stars, you’re
not good enough for anyone to love. It’s a message too many of them are buying.
